![]() Thanks, Paul. I was able to resolve the problem. I had tried your suggestion previously (no luck) but then decided to install the fifth one on the list (it is not clear to me what the difference is between the first and fifth, but anyway.). Upon reboot I saw no 'x' by the speaker icon. I then checked Device Manager and found 'Sound, Video, and Game Controllers' once again listed with 'Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221' listed underneath it. I do not know if I have a Realtek chip (I have whatever came with the laptop); how can one determine the make of the chip? I'm curious: What do you make of all this? Thanks again for taking the time to advise. As it turns out, the fix did not last long. Download the latest drivers for your HP Pavilion dv9700 to keep your Computer up-to-date. After a few hours I began to have problems with the audio. I went to disable it thinking I could just re-enable it. When attempting to enable I was asked to reboot. When it came back up, I was back to the old problem. I attempted running the recommended Conexant download and got 'ERROR: Driver Installation Failed. Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver.' Then I went back to the Realtek download that worked previously. After running it successfully one time (it rebooted the computer but the 'x' was still there) I was unable to run it successfully again ('No Driver was supported in this driver package'). Any other ideas? I wouldn't have been able to give you this info before, but, grasping at straws, I went into setup during bootup and ran memory and hard disk diagnostics. Two hours later I booted up Windows and, wouldn't you know it, by audio was again available (when the 'x' appears, no 'Sound' entry appears under device manager.
